You may have heard horror stories about Las Vegas and how unsafe it is for families to explore. Though bad things can happen, Vegas is still a very safe destination to be in with the family. In fact, Sin City has the same types of crimes you would expect to find in any major city and is no more dangerous to visit than any of those other big cities. The key to being safe is staying aware of your surroundings, using common sense and paying attention to those around you.

Here are some tips we have to offer to help keep your family safe when exploring Las Vegas:

Don’t make it easy for pickpockets. Keep wallets in your front pocket or in pockets with zippers, snaps or buttons. Wearing a messenger bag or crossbody purse will keep your bag in front of you where you can keep an eye on it. If you plan to carry a backpack, get one that is slash-proof. Do not let any of your bags out of sight, even for a moment.

For money, opt to carry travelers checks with you instead of large amounts of cash. It is best to only take with you what you need for the day and leave the rest in your rooms safe. Leave other valuables, such as credit cards, airline tickets and jewelry in the room safe with the cash you are not using.

If staying in a hotel, it is important to keep track of your key. Make sure to keep it in a place where you will not lose it nor will it be easily taken from you. Some suggest leaving your key at the front desk while you are out and picking it back up when you return. Depending on the age of your children, it is always best for you to keep the room keys of younger kids with you. Do not let them walk around with their keys, as they may misplace them. As always, when leaving your room, check to make sure you have your key with you and your room is secure before walking away from it.

The biggest tip anyone can offer is for exploring Las Vegas is to stay alert. Know your surroundings and trust your instincts. Be aware of where your valuables are and always keep them secure when they are with you.  If you feel uncomfortable, go find somewhere that feels more comfortable. If you see someone doing something suspicious, report it immediately to the hotel, a police officer, a security officer or a member of the hotel staff.

Those exploring Vegas with young children need to keep all the above listed safety tips in mind, as well as find a way to teach young children how to be safe. This includes instructing them to never talk to strangers or open doors to your hotel room without knowing who it is. They should also know the hotel name they are staying in and room number. Remind children they can call 911 should they need help and if possible, introduce them a member of the front desk, so they know where to go for help when they get separated from the rest of the family.

Hopefully these tips help keep you and your family safe when exploring Las Vegas. If you have any other tips or suggestions, feel free to email them to us and we will include them on our list. (You can email us at heatherlandon@macaronikid.com)
