It does not matter if you are looking for a car to transport the kids around to all of their activities or something for a new family. Being prepared and know what you want before you head out to the dealership is just the beginning of finding the perfect car for you and your family. There are so many styles, makes and models to pick from and not everyone needs the same thing from their car.
Here are some tips we have compiled that should help you pick the best car for your family’s needs:
Money Matters
Before you leave to go to the dealership, take time to do as much research on the make and models that interest you. Learn as much as possible, including features and pricing. While conducting your search, also think about how much you have to spend on a car. Do you have a down payment and how much can you afford for monthly payments. Don’t forget to consider insurance, maintenance and other vehicle related costs when working your automotive budget.
Features
Make a list of all the features you want your new car to have. This includes number of seats to safety features. Determine what are some must-have features and what are some luxury (we can live without) features. This includes leather seats for easy clean ups, cup holders, backseat entertainment and cargo capacity. Knowing this, along with your budget, will help you determine the car you can get.
Tip: Take some time to read different reviews from vehicle users. It will help you learn what other parents like or dislike about a certain vehicle.
Usage
Think about what the car will be used for. Will you, the parent be driving the car, or will it be used by your teenager who is just learning how to drive? This can determine if you get a large SUV or a smaller vehicle that is easier to handle. Another thing to consider is will mostly kids be sitting in the backseat or will you have teens and adults riding in the back. Some cars offer more leg room in the backseat than others and who will be in the car with you will have a huge influence over the car you choose.
Safety
Do you research and learn which cars have higher safety ratings. The best place to do this is by using the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHSTA) database.
Inspection
If buying a used car, set up a time to have an inspection done. This is important because you want to make sure the car is running properly and know in advance what repairs need to be made in the immediate or near future.
Fuel efficiency
With gas prices going up and down, finding a vehicle with great gas mileage is almost a must for families. Especially if you plan on taking road trip vacations in the future. Check and compare city and highway mileage before deciding on a vehicle.
Towing
Do you plan to be doing a lot of towing? This includes toys (boats and jet skis), trailers, campers and anything else that can be towed. If this is the case, make sure the vehicle has some type of towing capabilities and know the towing capacity. .
Now that you know what you need from your vehicle, it is time to start comparing different vehicles with the same features. Then when you have narrowed it down to a couple, go out and take a test drive.
