It’s the new year and if you are like me, you have made New Year’s resolutions every year. How often have you succeeded in sticking with your resolutions? Let’s be honest here. Okay, I will be honest first. I would estimate that the percentage of New Year’s resolutions I have kept is about 30% over the past 10 years and that is being very generous. It’s about time I break that tradition of failing me when it comes to making changes in my life.

Are you wanting to make real change in 2020? I know I am.

It does not matter if you want to lose weight, get more organized, save more money or spend more time with the family. Whatever it is you want to do, you need to take the necessary steps to make real change and not just a temporary change in your life. Over the years, I have discovered why my resolutions have failed me and know what needs to be done. But if I am being honest here, I need to work harder on sticking with my resolutions. Not just talk about what I want. I need to do more than tell the universe I want to do something and write it on a piece of paper. I need to take action. Action is the key word to sticking to those New Year’s resolutions, following through and making real change in my life.

The first thing I have learned is that you cannot succeed at anything if you are doing it alone. Seek the wisdom of others and ask for advice from those who can guide you in the right direction. Share your resolution with others who can help hold you accountable. Just make sure everyone you reach out to will be there to support you and not hinder your progress.

The second thing I have learned is that consistency is the key to success. Whatever you need to do, do it daily, weekly or monthly. Just keep doing what you need to do on a regular basis. Figure out what it is you need to do for your resolution and how often it needs to be done. Stay consistent to make real change. If you are not consistent, any changes you make will only be temporary.

Finally, keep your resolution in front of you where you see it multiple times throughout the day. Post it on your fridge, at your computer, keep a post it in your wallet or on your bathroom mirror. If you see it daily, you will be reminded of what you want to achieve. This is also a good time to sit down with the family and create a family dream board. That way everyone can get involved with a family New Year’s resolution. Your board should have 1 thing for you, 1 thing for your family, 1 thing for health and 1 thing for work/business. It can include more, but should at least include these.

Dream big, dig in and go for it!

And most of all ... Be HAPPY!
