The city of Las Vegas offers arts classes at several locations that are designed to mold amateur artists in a guided, dynamic and studio-style program tailored to the needs of each student. These open-enrollment classes encourage exploration while creating the opportunity for each student to experience a diverse performing and visual arts education. Enjoy three unique workshops consisting of book discussions and dialogue, using the past to understand issues affecting the African-American community today and tomorrow. Sankofa literally translates to "look to the past to inform the future." The symbol itself depicts a bird, which appears to be moving forward while looking back, supporting the idea of incorporating the aspects of the past into the future. The workshop will be literary-based, led by a group of community facilitators, exploring the soul of black folks as a result of the miseducation of the Negro; literature to be used is authored by both W. First Street Art Trail Aerial Gallery Banner Artwork Exhibition (all ages)
Through March 2, available to view at all times.
Vinyl banners will be available to view at all times on First Street from Bridger to Boulder avenues.
The Aerial Gallery along the First Street Art Trail is the newest rendition of this long-running banner artwork program. Artworks by Natalie Delgado, Shan Michael Evans, Chase McCurdy, Austine Wood Comarow, Diane Bush, Jeff Fulmer, Brian Martinez and Joseph Watson are featured on light poles spanning eight blocks from Bridger to Boulder avenues. Other artworks along the trail include the Windows on First temporary public art installations, Mary Hill’s Cycled Musings bike racks, and Jesse Smigel’s Snowball in Vegas cat sculpture. This is the fifth year of this part of the Celebrating Life! annual juried art exhibit program. It includes three artists that have won three or more awards over the past 19 years. Artists were chosen based on the texture present in each of their works and the visual similarity in the subjects each artist presents. A collection of individual abstract pieces or ‘landscapes’ that depict the basin and range region in which we live. When these individual pieces come together, the contrasting colors, textures and forms are reminiscent of the experience of wandering through the desert, taking in geological forms, reflections, mirages, sunsets and ghost town remains. African-American Heritage Exhibition (all ages)

City Hall Chamber Gallery, 495 S. Main St., second floor.
This annual exhibit features the work of an African-American artist who lives and works in Nevada. This year’s featured artist spent his formative years in Texas developing his love for cowboys by watching western movies with his grandmother. After moving to Los Angeles, George Ameal Wilson earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine Arts from California State College Los Angeles. Wilson studied under Si Fountain for five years and was a student of Joseph Gibby for two years. Inspired by artist Norman Rockwell, he wants his artwork to tell a story. People of all ethnic groups are part of the western experience. These ethnic groups contributed to our history and he wants to show this in his work. They were here; they did something; and he believes we need to open up to our history and see that various groups of people built this country. He saw no mention of these people growing up as a child and his goal is to convey his thoughts and messages through the people in his work.
