With many of us home from work for the next several weeks, there is no better time than today to spring clean your home. With so many COVID-19 concerns in our community, there are some things you can do while cleaning your home to keep your home, yourself and your family safe and healthy.
Here are some cleaning and disinfecting tips from the CDC:
- Clean surfaces with detergent or soap and water prior to disinfecting.
- Use household bleach, an alcohol solution (70%+ alcohol), or EPA-registered household disinfectants to disinfect surfaces (Make sure the products you are using are safe for the surfaces in your home.)
- Limit possibilities of dispersing the virus in the air and do not shake dirty laundry.
- Wash items that have been in contact with someone who is sick immediately.
- Clean and disinfect laundry supplies, including hangers, baskets, etc.
- Clean all high-touch surfaces multiple times throughout the day.
- You don’t need to use strong chemicals, regular household cleaners will do the trick.
- Clean/replace kitchen and cleaning sponges often.
Also, make sure you wash your hands and wash them often. The CDC recommends you wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water. One tip I learned when I was a lifeguard is to wash them while signing the “Happy Birthday” songs two times. If soap and water is not available, use an alcohol based hand sanitizer.
