We love escaping for a quick day trip and one of our go-to places is the Hoover Dam. My husband and I love to go for the view and the history. While our son, well, he loves to go for the large pickles they sell there. So as always, we had to stop and get him a pickle before we started exploring. But after that, he had fun exploring the dam too.

It doesn't matter if you plan to take a guided tour or go by yourself, you are sure to have fun. A variety of tours are available from the area, including helicopter, bus, jeep, and boat. If you are looking for a unique tour of the Hoover Dam, book one of the Sunset Cruises from a local company. I hear they are worth it!

If you plan on going yourself, you can explore the Visitors Center and/or take one of the two tours offered by the Hoover Dam - Power Plant Tour and Dam Tour. Upon arrival, parking is available in the garage for only $10 per vehicle. There are other paid lots and some free lots on the Arizona side, but it is a hike back to the Dam and the museum.

Visiting the Hoover Dam is a great learning experience for families to enjoy together. Plus, the beauty of the structure, which is a work of engineering art, is something everyone in the area must see up close. Plus, it is right here in Boulder City, making it easy to get to and still leaving plenty of time in the day to explore downtown and enjoy lunch at one of the small cafes.

The Visitors Center is open daily from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., with the last tickets sold at 4:15 p.m. The center is open year round, with the exception of Thanksgiving and Christmas days. The parking garage is open daily from 8 a.m. until 5:15 p.m. Admission for a self-guided tour of the Visitors Center is $10 per person and children ages 3 and under are free.

If you have the opportunity, we recommend you take one of the tours. They are both fun and very educational. Our son loved it and is constantly asking to go back for another tour. The Hoover Dam Guided Tour is $30 per person and the Guided Power Plant Tour is $15 per person. Both worth the time and money to experience.

See why more than one million visitors have made their way to the Hoover Dam every year. Make plans to explore the Hoover Dam with the family before school starts back up again. With temperatures high at this time of year, set the alarm and wake up early. The earlier you go, the cooler and less crowded it will be. But if you live in Henderson or Boulder City, you probably already knew that.

Don’t forget to drive over the Dam before you leave. The kids will love it!

To get to the Hoover Dam, take US Highway 93 to Nevada State 172. You will be able to follow the signs from there. The Dam is located on the Nevada-Arizona border.
