New Year's Day, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Lunar New Year, and more

  Welcome to 2023!! We are easing into the new year with our families by marking these 10 events and holidays happening in January. We hope some of them give your family reason to celebrate and laugh together too, while others inspire you, and also give room for thoughtful family discussions on things like: How can YOU make a positive difference in our world in 2023?

1. New Year's Day

We are ringing in 2023 with feelings of gratitude, along with hope for a brighter year ahead. Jan. 1

2. Dress Up Your Pet Day

Dress up your dog, goat, guinea pig, or cat. Pets aren't cooperative? Paint your kids' faces to dress up as their favorite animal. Jan. 14

3. Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Celebrate the life of the great leader of the Civil Rights movement by doing something to effect positive change in your community today. Jan. 16

  Local Events -

1. MLK: I Have a DreamParticipants can write down their dreams on thought bubbles and have them hung up in the library lobby during this weeklong event.  - Windmill Library, all day, Sunday, January 15th - Saturday, January 21st


2. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Legacy Learn how Martin Luther King Jr. motivated a group of students in the book Sit-In: How Four Friends Stood Up by Sitting Down by Andrea Davis Pinkney. Then collaborate with us to create a mural of Martin Luther King Jr. For grades K-5. Registration required, Summerlin Library, 4:30PM – 5:30PM, Tuesday January 17th

4. Kid Inventors' Day

What do televisions, water skis, and earmuffs have in common? They were all invented by kids! More than 500,000 children and teens invent gadgets and games each year. Held each year on Benjamin Franklin's birthday (he invented the first swim flippers at age 12). Jan. 17

5. Ditch Your Resolutions Day

This is one day we're planning on NOT taking part in! Jan. 17

6. Popcorn Day

7. National Hugging Day

Kevin Zaborney invented this holiday in 1986 to encourage family and friends to hug more often. There are many actual health benefits to hugging, including that it releases oxytocin, a hormone associated with feelings of happiness. Jan. 21

8. Lunar New Year

It's time to say goodbye to the Year of the Tiger and usher in the Year of the Rabbit! Jan. 22

   Local Events - 

1. Bellagio Conservatory & Botanical Gardens - Visit this special display for Lunar New Year! - all day, Monday, January 9th - Saturday, March 4th


2. Lunar New Year - Participants will listen to a story and then can create crafts at different stations to celebrate the Lunar New Year!  For all ages, at the Windmill Library, 10:30 am – 11:30 pm, Sunday, January 22nd


3.Spring Festival! A FREE one-day festival celebrating the Lunar New Year!

The event features:

  • Live performances
  • Arts & crafts
  • pop-up vendors
  • Workshops
  • Games & inflatables
  • Lion Dance to open the event!

 at Desert Breeze Community Center, 11 am - 2 pmSunday, January 29th

9. International Holocaust Remembrance Day

On this annual day of commemoration, the United Nations urges all to honor the six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust and millions of other victims of Nazism. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum offers excellent resources on learning more. Jan. 27

Gather the family 'round and work on a puzzle on National Puzzle Day. Doing puzzles together makes for great family time! Jan. 29
